Wednesday's Workout: Easier Said Than Done

A great one today.

Strength Skill:
  • Zercher Squats (5-3-3-1-1)

Other than a little twinge when I dorsiflexed my ankle at the bottom of the squats, the Zerchers felt good today. I matched my previous PR of 205 pounds (1.5X my bodyweight), so I'm happy.

Today's metcon -- after the jump...

Metcon:
  • 100 burpees for time.

That's it. Simple, brutal, effective.

I decided to try to keep a reasonable pace through the first 60 or 70 burpees, and then try to burn rubber in the home stretch.

The first part of the plan worked; I settled into a steady rhythm, and the first 40 burpees felt fine. I slowed a bit more after that, and paused occasionally for a second to shake the fire out of my burning legs, but still: Everything was still five-by-five.

As I approached 70, I got ready to engage my afterburners...but they just weren't there. Yes, I managed to blaze through 2 or 3 at a time, but then I'd have to stop to huff and puff a bit. Meanwhile, I could see the Terminator from across the gym, steadily amassing reps with mechanical efficiency. My sprint-to-the-finish strategy wasn't paying off, so after a dozen lung-exploding burpees, I fell back into the pace with which I started the workout -- but with a lot more pauses between reps.

Result: 7:53 as RXed. Not terrible -- I do enjoy these bodyweight workouts -- but not particularly fast, either. I wasn't nearly as speedy as this guy.

Plus, the Terminator beat me by 9 seconds. And I don't even remember seeing him break a sweat.
