Wednesday's Workout

I was still sore from Monday's workout when I dragged my butt out of bed at 4:20 this morning, but there's nothing like some new pain to make me forget about the old pain.

Only six of us showed up at the 5 a.m. class this morning. A few months ago, when the only nutjobs in attendance were me and XFitMama, this would have seemed like a huge crowd. But now that we have 10 regulars, the smaller turnout at today's class made it feel almost intimate.

Strength Skill:

  • Front Squats (2 sets of 3, 3 sets of 1)
Not feeling it today. Although I matched my PR from last week, I couldn't add even five additional pounds on the barbell without having to dump it. Going above 1.5X bodyweight will have to wait until the next time we cycle through front squats.

Metcon:

For time:
  • 30 wallball shots (20-pound ball)
  • 30 pull-ups
  • 30 burpees
  • 20 wallball shots (20-pound ball)
  • 20 pull-ups
  • 20 burpees
  • 10 wallball shots (20-pound ball)
  • 10 pull-ups
  • 10 burpees
Ah, wallballs. I used to hate 'em. Twenty pounds doesn't sound like a lot, but having to repeatedly thrust that weight up above a ten-foot target is no walk in the park. I used to struggle mightily with this movement -- especially back when we were at the flower shop, where the rafters on either side of the narrow target made wallball shots a test of accuracy as well. (Miss the target and your ball takes a nasty bounce across the room.) These days, the ball doesn't feel quite as heavy anymore (could this be a sign I'm actually developing a bit of strength?), and I'm getting more proficient at heaving that thing up the wall. But it doesn't mean I like 'em.

Still: The hardest part of today's workout were the burpees. Doing them after cranking out wallball shots and pull-ups is pure torture. I had to stop after every few reps to suck wind and cough up a lung.

In the end, I allowed myself way too many breaks. Result: 13:01 as RXed.
